Friday, 13 June 2008Re-cycled Computers Reach School Children in CameroonGIFT is delighted to support the The NAVTI Foundation’s Computers For African Schools project which involves procuring unwanted, second hand computers from businesses in Hong Kong for use in Cameroon’s schools. The first shipment of 250 refurbished computers procured from Caritas HK was successfully delivered to Cameroon in June 2008. GIFT sponsored the shipping, customs clearance and distribution costs for this shipment.
The Computers For African Schools project involves the recycling of “e-waste” as educational tools for underprivileged children and is expected to positively impact the lives of over 100,000 people in Cameroon. The project is designed to run as a self sustaining social enterprise. Accordingly, NAVTI will charge recipient schools a minimal handling fee for the computers. This fee will be used to fund subsequent shipments of computers to Cameroon.
The NAVTI Foundation is a charity based in Kumbo town, Cameroon with a presence in Hong Kong. NAVTI is headed by Jean Louis Shudzeka, who is an Alumni member of GIFT’s Global Young Leaders Programme.
