China Anti-Desertification and Rural Prosperity Project
August 16-28, 2008
The Global Institute for Tomorrow (GIFT) is recruiting young executives to participate in its Global Young Leaders Programme (YLP) taking place from August 16-28, 2008 during the Olympic Games in China. The field component of the programme will be held in Ningxia province – an area that is fighting desertification and sandstorms, which greatly limit local livelihood options as well as resulting in environmental damage.
Participants will work closely with the Yinchuan Jinhu Eco-agriculture Tourism Company Limited (Jinhu Enterprise) - an enterprise that has adopted a sustainable development model to create prosperity while fighting desertification. Young Leaders will develop a business plan detailing how the Enterprise can best expand its wine-making and eco-tourism businesses to support community development in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable manner.

The programme will begin with an MBA-style classroom module in Beijing during which participants will examine topics such as: globalisation, civil society, role of government, business ethics, diversity and corporate social responsibility. They will then apply these concepts in a week long experience on-site in rural Ningxia, where they will work closely with Jinhu enterprise and community members to develop a business plan. The plan produced by the team will form the basis upon which GIFT will subsequently seek to identify sources of investment for the project.
Whilst in the field, participants will examine the overall model adopted by the company which converts desert areas into eco-agriculture plantations and eco-tourism zones in order to understand how a commercially-oriented sustainable development model can be effectively replicated in other desert zones. They will also investigate how the enterprise can modernise its winery processes and adopt new wine-making technology.
The YLP
The Global Young Leaders Programme was included as a commitment at the inaugural Bill Clinton Global Initiative in 2005. Past participants have included executives from UBS, HP, JP Morgan, Shell, CLSA, Beijing Li Ning Sports, MTRC, Cheung Kong Group, Cathay Pacific, Shui On Group among others. This is an excellent opportunity for young leaders to develop cross-cultural leadership skills through hands-on experience while having a positive impact on local communities.
